Conferring and Assessing Student Writers

“The Conferring Guy” returns to Indianapolis to demonstrate how to have productive and strategic one-on-one conversations with student writers. He’ll explain how to move through the conference structure of research-decide-teach and help teachers envision an ongoing assessment plan based on information gathered during conferring sessions.

Drawing on his classic professional text for teachers, How’s It Going?, as well as his new book A Teacher’s Guide to Writing Conferences, Carl will also offer:

Strategies for teaching students to assume an active role in conferring.

Ways to use touchstone texts in individual conferences.

Practical advice for fitting conferring into tight schedules and moving efficiently among writers.

  Minilessons that support conferring.

Teachers will understand how to gather information about each writer in class and create whole group, small group, and individual lessons in response.
