Teaching Commentary in Writing Workshop, Grades 4+

Karla Reilly

April 9th
at IPS Center for Inquiry #70

4:30 pm-6:30 pm

Explore the world of commentary, a nonfiction genre used to persuade readers to believe as “I” (the writer) do.  A commentary study supports students with identifying and thinking about their opinions, backing their opinions with facts, and persuading the reader to think like them.

This workshop will take teachers through each part of the genre study, from gathering stacks of commentaries for immersion to making theories with students about what commentaries are, to supporting students’ own drafting and revising efforts.

Grades 4 and up.
