We help teachers launch and sustain reading workshops that include a balance of read-alouds, independent reading, whole group instruction, word work and conferring. Rather than simply teaching the text itself, teachers in reading workshop help students develop a set of strategies—strategies for decoding as well as comprehension—that can be used throughout life across subject areas to deepen understanding of text. Students learn to question and read critically, understanding the complexities of interpretation, motivation, prejudices, symbolism and more. Teachers help students access high quality texts in their original formats, and students make choices about what they read. Learning is evident in discussions, notebook work, classroom charts, book reviews and application to other content areas.
Our team of internationally and nationally renowned scholars—authors of best-selling literacy education texts for teachers—are highly accessible to our community. They have included Frank Serafini, Kathy Collins, Matt Glover, Lester Laminack, Peter Johnston, Pam Allyn and Katie Van Sluys. Our scholars visit frequently and think collaboratively with teachers across many hours at each visit. They are available for one-on-one and small group conversation during our events. Collectively, our visiting scholars have published more than 70 books—both professional texts for teachers and exemplary literature for children and young adults!
