We help teachers launch and sustain math workshops with a balance of number work, inspecting equations, fact fluency and maintenance, and problem-solving occurring weekly. Daily structure includes whole group instruction with a focused mini-lesson, time for independent work, conferring and sharing.
In math workshops, we see students move from simply understanding the procedures of math to developing a true conceptual sense of numbers, algebra and other essential connections to their everyday lives. This emerging work parallels the foundations of “balanced literacy,” “reading workshop” and “writing workshop.”
Our visiting scholars of math education include Catherine Fosnot, Ryan Flessner, Courtney Flessner, John Ulbright and Nicole Caulfield.
